G.C. Murray II Presents CLE on Ethical Leadership and Communication for Lawyers
Association GC’s CEO and Managing Attorney explores practical strategies for managing difficult conversations with clients, staff, and colleagues while upholding professional responsibilities.

October 20, 2026 — G.C. Murray II, Esq., DPL, CEO & Managing Attorney of Association GC, presented “Ethical Leadership Communication for Lawyers: Difficult Conversations With Clients, Staff, and Colleagues,” a Continuing Legal Education presentation focused on the intersection of ethical responsibility, professional communication, and leadership in legal practice.
Murray, an award-winning attorney, executive coach, and organizational leader, drew on his experience in legal practice, professional development, and organizational leadership to examine how lawyers can approach challenging conversations with greater clarity, accountability, and professionalism.
A central theme of the presentation was that communication challenges in legal practice extend beyond interpersonal discomfort. Delayed communication, escalating exchanges, and failures to acknowledge or correct problems can create professional and operational risks. Murray framed ethical communication around five principles: Clarity, Candor, Consistency, Confidentiality, and Accountability, emphasizing that leadership principles must operate alongside, rather than replace, applicable professional rules.
The legal ethics CLE also addressed professional obligations reflected in the Florida Rules of Professional Conduct, including communication with clients, diligence, confidentiality, and the responsibilities of lawyers supervising attorneys and nonlawyer staff.

“Ethical communication is not just about choosing the right words when a conversation gets difficult. It is about understanding your responsibilities, being willing to address the issue directly, and following through on what the situation requires. Leadership becomes meaningful when accountability remains part of the conversation, especially when the message is uncomfortable,” said Murray.
Throughout the program, Murray applied those principles to situations lawyers routinely encounter, including managing unrealistic expectations, communicating delays or unfavorable developments, resolving fee and scope misunderstandings, supervising staff, and responding to professional disagreements without unnecessary escalation. The presentation reinforced that effective advocacy and professionalism can coexist, even when lawyers must communicate firmly or navigate conflict.
The session also emphasized law firm leadership and supervisory accountability. Participants were encouraged to create environments where team members remain responsible for their work without becoming afraid to report problems. Murray characterized effective supervision as an ongoing system involving clear expectations, appropriate delegation, constructive feedback, timely intervention, corrective action, and consistent follow-through.
Murray concluded the substantive portion of the presentation with a Five-Step Ethical Communication Playbook: Prepare, Clarify, Communicate, Document, and Follow Through. The framework encouraged lawyers to identify relevant facts, risks, and obligations; determine what must be understood; communicate directly and respectfully; preserve appropriate records; and fulfill commitments. The presentation stressed that the framework supports, rather than replaces, independent legal judgment.
The engagement reflects Murray’s broader work across Association GC and Greatness Curated at the intersection of legal practice, organizational leadership, professional communication, and executive development.
